Modelling and numerical simulations of larval migration of the sole (Solea solea (L.)) of the Bay of Biscay. Part 2: numerical simulations ArchiMer
Ramzi, Azeddine; Arino, Ovide; Koutsikopoulos, Constantine; Boussouar, Ahmed; Lazure, Pascal.
This paper is the second part of a work on the modelling of larval migration and growth fur the sole of the Bay of Biscay (Solea solea (L.)). The goal of the paper is twofold: first of all, it aims at presenting a numerical application of the formulae (concerning the recruitment rate) elaborated in the first paper. Results show a high sensitivity with respect to some parameters. Then, a comparison is made with a numerical model using a 3D circulation model provided by Ifremer.

ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Rene.
The spat production in the Bay of Arcachon has been recently disturbed. Bioassays using algae used as food for oyster larvae have shown that the organotin paints affect or inhibit growth of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans . Fresh waters coming into the bay and shore sediment did not affect the growth of these algae. Bioassays proposed by Woelke (1967) using embryos and larvae of Crassostrea gigas have shown that the quality of the sea water from Arcachon harbour has been improved a few months after the use of organotin paints has been prohibited. Likewise fresh waters are free from any micropollutants that could drastically disturb the reproduction of C. gigas in the bay.

Otoliths imprinting of sole (Solea solea) from the Bay of Biscay: a tool to discriminate individuals from nursery origins? ArchiMer
De Pontual, Helene; Lagardere, Francoise; Troadec, Herve; Batel, Alain; Desaunay, Yves; Koutsikopoulos, Constantin.
Sole nurseries are located in the main bays and estuaries of the Bay of Biscay, where juveniles from the same stock. concentrate and constitute temporarily isolated groups. This context being favourable for elemental analyses of juvenile otoliths this study has been initiated with the aim of obtaining environmental imprints of the main nurseries of origin of juveniles recruiting to the adult stock, and of evaluating the relative contribution of these nurseries to the stock. The objectives were to compare (i) the otolith elemental imprints obtained by sampling juveniles in the Loire and the Gironde nurseries, and (ii) two multi-element analysis techniques: laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) and solution-based ICPMS...

Oyster culture in European countries ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
Three species of oysters have been or are cultivated in Europe: Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas, and Ostrea edulis. If we follow the taxonomic critera of Grassé, the European oysters belong to the group of Mollusca, class of Lamellibranchia or Bivalves, order of Filibranchia, family Ostreidae with two genera: C. angulata (Lamarck), Portuguese, cupped oyster; C. gigas, (Thunberg), Japanese or Pacific, cupped oyster; Ostrea edulis (Linné), fiat European oyster. Some authors think that C. gigas and C. angulata belong to the same species. lndeed, Ranson stated that the characteristics of the larvae are the same, and Menzel obtained viable hybrids (F2) between these two oysters. AIso, Buroker et al. in studying the genetic variations of proteins and enzymes of...

This dissertation is focused on the study of implications of spatial patterns on survival of eggs and larvae and subsequent recruitment of the SW Atlantic anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. The study of distribution patterns is encompassed within the conceptual framework of the analysis of reproductive strategies of marine bony fish, as adaptations that enable them to cope with and actively exploit environmental variability, regulating their abundance and avoiding extinction. The SW Atlantic anchovy, is ideally suitable for studies on reproductive biology and recruitment on a comparative basis. Its spawning and nursery grounds are located in very diverse ecosystems. This variety refers to their physico-chemical properties, carrying capacity, the influence of...

Bruno, Daniel O..
The role of the Mar Chiquita lagoon and its adjacent coastal area as nursery ground for fish larvae and juveniles and the factors which regulate their recruitment process, was evaluated. To do so, we analyzed the fish early life stages composition and spatio-temporal variation over the marine-estuarine gradient of the lagoon and its relationship with environmental factors; the diel variation of these stages in the immediate area at the mouth of the lagoon; and the source of the organic carbon which feed them on the mouth of the lagoon and adjacent coastal area, by using stable isotope analysis. The richness and mean density of larvae were higher at the offshore area than at the lagoon. Inside the lagoon the dominant species in larval stage was Brevoortia...

Population and reproductive traits of a freshwater amphipod (Crustacea, Peracarida, Hyalellidae) from northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Castiglioni,Daniela da Silva; Limberger,Marcio; Castro,Vanessa da Silva; Ubessi,Francieli.
Abstract The study of population and reproductive traits provides information about the ecological structure of natural populations. This study aimed to characterize dynamics and reproductive traits of Hyalella palmeirensis from a natural pond from southern Brazil. The amphipods were sampled monthly (August 2012 to July 2013) by a person with the aid of a hand net for 20 minutes. Ovigerous females and pre-copulatory pairs were individualized in the field. A total of 12,325 individuals were sampled, being 1,421 males, 6,983 females (including 215 ovigerous females) and 3,921 juveniles. Paired and unpaired males were significantly greater in size than females. There was a positive correlation between body size (CL) of paired males and females. Males and...

Population structure and recruitment in mytilid bivalves from the Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent fields (37°17'N and 37°50'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) ArchiMer
Comtet, Thierry; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
Population structure and recruitment pattern of undescribed mytilid bivalves that dominate the animal communities associated with vents of the Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent fields (37 degrees 17' N and 37 degrees 50' N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) were studied from size-frequency analyses. Intra-site comparisons reveal that length-frequency distributions differ significantly from one location to the other. This spatial segregation of the sizes could be due to spatio-temporal variability in environmental conditions and to intraspecific competition processes, especially adult-larval interactions (competition for space and food resources, intraspecific larviphagy) that could prevent larvae from settling on surfaces covered by adults. A modal...

Alcolado Prieto, P.; Caballero Aragón, H.; Alcolado, P. M.; Lopeztegui Castillo, A..
The effect of pollution on coral recruitment has been insufficiently studied. This research deals with coral recruitment in coastal areas and aimed to determine the variations of density and dominant species of corals recruits in sites at different distances from pollution sources. The composition and structure of stony coral (scleractinian and milleporids) recruit associations were characterized in the fringing reef of Western Havana, Cuba. This reef is influenced by urban pollution from the Almendares River and a sewage outlet located at its mouth. Four sites were sampled on the upper fore reef escarpment at 10m deep every three months between July 2007 and May 2008. A 25cm side quadrat was used to determine the density and taxonomic composition of...

OceanDocs
Giménez Hurtado, E.; Alzugaray Martínez, R.; Garcés Rodríguez, Y.; Delgado Miranda, G.; Ventura Flores, A..

Recruitment of mussels in the Pertuis Breston (France) in these last years. A preliminary analysis on the influence of temperature and sunshine ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Dardignac, Marie-jose.
Since 1979, the IFREMER Laboratory follows mussel recruitement in the Pertuis Breton. Gametogenesis generally begins in September or October and ends in Décember. Spawning may begin in Februrary and continues up ta the end of April, but it usually occurs in the second fortnigh of March. The most important settlement generaly runs after the middle of May up to the middle of June. Duririg the study period, four years are noticeable by lack of settlement : 1982, 1989, 1990 and 1991. This failure thraughout these three last years resulted in a breakdown of the cultivated biomass. The present paper outlines a preliminary analysis on the influence of temperature and sunshine.

In the context of increasing demand for environmental recovery, aquatic systems may face the challenge of evolving under oligotrophication. This is the case in Mediterranean lagoons, in particular the shellfish-farmed Thau lagoon in France, where we studied recruitment of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Oyster spat and environmental parameters were monitored at several sampling sites for 3 yr (2012 to 2014) using an original method with a temporal overlap deployment of collectors to study pre- and post-settlement processes and to identify the best conditions for recruitment. Contrary to the ‘no Pacific oyster reproduction’ paradigm in Mediterranean lagoons, our study showed that recruitment of this introduced species is possible in the Thau lagoon at...

Reproductive biology and population dynamics of Ophiura Ijungmani were studied by measuring disk diameters and by examining oocyte size-frequencies and fecundity from a sequential seasonal series of large samples from a 2900 m deep Permanent Station in the Rockall Trough (Northeast Atlantic). Egg size (max. 90 !lm) and fecundity (up to 57000 eggs per individual) suggests indirect planktotrophic development, while a clear annual cycle in gametogenesis, with probably synchronous spawning in JanuaryFebruary, confirms a marked seasonality that is also seen as an annual, summertime set of postlarvae on to the bottom. Analysis of size structure of the population indicates annually discrete year classes with a maximum longevitv of around 10 years. lndividuals...
